Spam: Asia Domain Name Registration Limited

I received the following email:

Dear CEO,

We are Asia Domain Name Registration Limited, which is the Internet Registration Center (Asia DNR) in Asia. We have something important need to confirm with your company. On the Jan 15, 2008, we received an application formally. One company named “MieDac Holdings Limited” applied for the internet trademark keyword?Selfcateringhols ?and the domain names?selfcateringhols.cn,selfcateringhols.com.cn,selfcateringhols.hk,selfcateringhols.asia etc.?.
These days we are dealing with it, After our initial examination, we found that the internet trademark keyword and domain names applied for registration are as same as your company’s name and trademark. hope to get the affirmation of your company because that may relate to your intellectual property on internet. Now we have not finished the registration of MieDac company yet, in order to deal with this issue better, please let someone who is responsible for trademark or domain name contact me as soon as possible.

This bears a remarkable similarity to this one. The names may be different but the format (and telephone numbers, interestingly) are the same. The domain name is a variation on a theme. Don’t get sucked in..

I’m glad I read up on this. I received an email of exactly the same structure claiming that a company called “NetInfo Holdings Limited” in Hong Kong was looking to purchase our asian top level Domain Names. I had taken this to be legitimate until I found out that the .asia name is still in the pre-registration process where they were offering to sell us a 10 year authority over the name. Super dodgy and here is is.

Yep, total scam, I got the mail, checked the domains in question with our registrar, and they were still available. I’m not sure how they intend to get any business this way as I would have purchased the domains in question from dotster or network solutions anyway, but i’m glad i researched a little before pushing the button. (I have 5 domains in my dotster shopping cart as i write this). I’ll wait until I get a rebate offer and buy them when they’re 99 cents. A clever little phishing scam, I have to admit. I was worried. Thanks for having this post up, you saved me almost $200 dollars.

  9. Doh! I replied first – then did the research. Will terminate communications.
For the interest of this thread here is the response I received almost immediately:

    Dear Sir,

Thanks for your prompt reply. According to our investigation, NetInfo company is a Hong Kong company. If you have no relationship with them.According to our working experience, there are 2 possibilities:
    1. NetInfo company is a domain name investment company, they want to register these names before you and sell back to you to gain profits.
    2. It may be a commercial method, NetInfo company is consigned by your competitor to register, let your clients feel confusion.

We knew you have registered the domain name “Supplybase.com” and own the intellectual property / own the trademark “Supplybase”, this is why we informed you. But now NetInfo company wanted to apply for other domain names and internet brand name you have not registered yet. NetInfo company wants to apply the following domain names and internet brand name:
    1. Domain Name
    supplybase.com.cn
    supplybase.net.cn
    supplybase.org.cn
    supplybase.hk
    supplybase.mobi
    supplybase.tw
    supplybase.com.tw
    supplybase.tm
    supplybase.asia

    2. Internet Brand Name
    Supplybase

You must know Domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So NetInfo company has right to register them. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to dispute their application. So required by China government to inform your company to protect your interest. But as the company whose trademarks relate to the applied domains, you will get the priority to register these domain names.

If you have business in China or you want to develop business in China in the near future, so I think these domain names are very important for you! Of course, each company has their own idea. If you don’t think their application will affect your company, you can give up, we will finish their registration. But if you think these domain names are useful for your company, we can send an application form to you and help you register these within dispute period. This is the only way to prevent domain name grab. Pls let us know your decision soon, so that we can handle the next step.

    Best Regards,

  10. Thsi is the answer I got after telling them that we will take legal steps*

    “Thanks for your prompt reply.

I have told you that Domain Name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle, anyone or any organization can register them before you applying for registration these doamins So MieDac Holdings Limited has right to register. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to dispute their application. And in China,

the law definitely indicate that if the domain names were registered by the others, and haven’t been applied for arbitration statement within two years, after that period reintroduce to apply, the arbitration committee will not dispose the case.

Don’t know whether you have heared the matter which rob to register google’s domains or not, there is expatiation in the enclosure, you will know more about this matter after you look into.
If you have any question in this domain, please don’t hesitate contact me.

  17. We are checking with ICANN, but after reading this blog, I cannot believe that it could be anything other than an elaborate scam. ADNR has no website, and after contacting them, we ascertained that they do not have anyone who speaks Cantonese or English despite the fact the office is supposedly in Hong Kong.

They are completely PRC run, with the thinking ability of a turnip. To be fair, they nearly fooled us, and we have the benefit of having fluent Mandarin speakers dealing with their team. If any of you guys called them up, I think the red flag would have been raised the minute you found out that they couldn’t communicate in our language.

We received this, which I immediately realized was an attempted extortion.

Note that China Net Technology appears to be a legitimate firm, but is not on the ICANN list of registrars. It was only when I searched for the “NetInfo Holdings” name that I found this site. These people seem to be branching out and changing the names they are using to try to avoid being found out. If the phone numbers are the same, it should be possible for law enforcement to track down the perpetrators. I don’t know if the cnnet.hk is legitimate, but it really doesn’t matter – it is still attempted extortion, not just spam, though the request for money is not included in the message.

Today I received the same kind of mail here in Japan.
I suppose they are expecting that we like to reserve some of the domains for the purpose of preventing evil (cheating?) use of our company name or future possibility of establishing subsidiary company in other country. In such cases, they will charge much money to keep the domains. But I do not think they really aquire the proposed domains. If we ignore their notification, they will lose the reasoning for keeping those domains with some cost. These are only scares.

As to the evil use of company name.
I receive a spam every days from www.nomura-financial.com, almost a loan shark. There is a worlwide financial service group in the name of Nomura and threre is a subdividiary company in the name of Nomura Fincancial Partners which has no web site. The “nomura-financial.com” is apparently damaging the credibility of Nomura. The Nomura is showing notification on the web at the following.

I get several per day, claiming to be from various companies – the overlap sort of dilutes the believability but I’m glad you posted this so we could all have a place to compare notes.

    Thank you!

Great these posts! I got the exact same email twice (though of course with my company name) and I was doubting a bit what to do. I frist googled and found your posts that supported my doubts about the honesty of the mail.

    Thanks!

    Hi Caroline,
I very much doubt it, if you have already registered the domain they cannot then register in their name.
Personally I would simply ignore them.

( followed by some address possibly fake)
I replied that I had nothing to do with the other applicant. He then requested me to buy those names before the other applicant. I then see this. Wish I had the brain to research before replying.
